Something crafty this way comes...

Here's a versatile pattern you can make in an afternoon, either as a finger puppet or a standing crow character with wire legs and feet. Crafted from boiled wool, felt or fleece, your crow can be a finger puppet for nature play, an ornament for your Halloween tree or tablescape, or a special display character. Your PDF download includes the pattern you can print out on card stock, a 26-page fully illustrated tutorial booklet (including how to prep boiled wool), plus patterns for optional costume variations and accessories.

If you're new to sewing, you'll find the instructions beginner-friendly whether you have a sewing machine or want to learn hand-stitching techniques for toymaking. Children under 10 will most likely need adult accompaniment in order to succeed unless they already have a bit of sewing experience.  And if you're more experienced at sewing, you'll find lots of creative costume and accessories options for exercising your imagination. For some ideas to get you started, visit the Design-Your-Own page or our Customers' Character Gallery.

Crows finish 5-6 inches tall, so they can fit right into the 1:12 standard for dollhouses. Making a batch of little crows can be a great way to enjoy fall and prep for Halloween this year. Make different characters and/or enlist the children in your life to design costumes for the characters (and tell you the stories that go along with them).

Please note:

Crow finger puppets have small parts and are not suitable for children under 3.

Standing crow characters are not toys -- they have sharp scratchy wire components and are not intended for children.

To make each crow, you'll need:

  • Fabric: body—9” x  12” piece of black fabric: felt, fleece, corduroy, faux fur, or boiled wool (see page 5) eye accent—1” square white felt beak—2” square black vinyl, microsuede, pleather, leather or felt
  • Eyes: 3mm opaque black glass seed beads (6/0), 2 per crow
  • Thread: body: all-purpose thread
  • Needle for hand sewing
  • Polyester stuffing: small amount for head, more for body of standing crow
  • Card stock or index stock for pattern pieces
  • Chopstick or turning stick
  • Glue: Strong-holding fabric glue: Beacon Fabri-tac or Aleene’s Fabric Fusion, hot glue or permanent glue dots

    • Notions: ribbon, lace, trim, ric-rac, etc.

This listing is for a PDF downloadable pattern only, not a completed crow.
